- In listening and reading, French festival texts use on constantly for general customs â train yourself to read on as "people" or "one" in cultural contexts, not just "we".
- If you describe a festival in writing, use three time frames: what people DO (present), what you DID last year (perfect), what you WILL DO next year (near future). This earns AO3 tense range marks.
- Don't confuse une fĂȘte (a party/celebration) with une fĂȘte nationale (a public holiday) â context matters.
- The AQA reading paper often features authentic French texts about the rentrĂ©e or the 14 juillet â knowing these well gives you a real advantage.
â Common error: La quatorze juillet est la fĂȘte nationale française.
â Correct: Le quatorze juillet est la fĂȘte nationale française.
Why it costs marks: When referring to a date as a noun (the 14th of July), French uses the masculine article le because it refers to le jour (the day), which is masculine. This is different from saying la Bastille (which is feminine â the fortress). La quatorze juillet is a very visible gender error that examiners note in written responses.
