Higher tier French is not about knowing more words â it is about using more precise, more nuanced words, and combining them in complex structures. This topic gives you the advanced character vocabulary, relationship language, health terminology and work/education vocabulary that separates Band 3 from Band 4 responses. Every phrase here is either explicitly on the AQA 8652 Higher vocabulary list or is a high-frequency construction in Band 4 model answers.

- One correctly used bien que + subjonctif in a Higher writing task can lift you from Band 3 to Band 4 for AO3.
- Don't overuse subjunctive â one or two well-placed uses are worth more than multiple attempts where you get the form wrong.
- In reading, when you see bien que, quoique, Ă condition que â expect a subjunctive after it. Use this to parse the sentence structure.
- Higher vocabulary words like le bien-ĂȘtre, la dĂ©pendance, les inĂ©galitĂ©s also appear in reading and listening texts â recognising them passively is as important as producing them.
â Common error: Bien que je suis stressĂ©, je continue Ă travailler.
â Correct: Bien que je sois stressĂ©, je continue Ă travailler.
Why it costs marks: Bien que always triggers the subjunctive. Using the indicative (suis) after bien que is one of the most penalised Higher-tier errors because it shows the student has attempted but incorrectly applied a complex structure. The subjunctive form of ĂȘtre in the je form is sois â memorise it.
