Imagine trying to tell a friend what you did last weekend without using any past tense â impossible. The perfect tense (le passĂ© composĂ©) is the main past tense in spoken and written French, and the majority of French verbs build it with the helper verb avoir. Master this and you can describe any past event â from what you ate for breakfast to your last holiday.

đĄ Exam Tips & Common Errors
- Always check you have two parts: the correct form of avoir AND the past participle. One without the other scores nothing for that verb.
- In the 90-word task, one or two perfect tense verbs with avoir signal the past time frame â you do not need many.
- Adverbs of frequency (souvent, toujours, déjà , jamais) slot between avoir and the past participle: j'ai déjà vu ce film.
- Learn the 15 irregular past participles above in pairs: faire/fait, prendre/pris, voir/vu, boire/bu, lire/lu.
â Common error: J'ai allĂ© au cinĂ©ma.
â Correct: Je suis allĂ©(e) au cinĂ©ma.
Why it costs marks: aller uses ĂȘtre, not avoir, in the perfect tense. This is one of the most common errors at GCSE. Writing j'ai allĂ© shows a fundamental confusion between the two auxiliary verbs and loses both AO2 (communication) and AO3 (accuracy) marks.
