📖 “And Then It Just Stopped”

Sixth form interviewer asks a student: “Why does the writer end on that image?” The student says: “I think the writer ran out of things to say.” The interviewer is not unkind, but she notes something. The student has read the text. They have not read the ending.

Endings are the most deliberate part of any text. A writer who has spent a thousand words building something does not just stop. Every ending is a structural choice. The question is always: what function does this ending serve?

What is a circular ending in structural analysis?: The writer returns to the opening image, phrase, or situation at the end -- but the meaning has shifted because of everything in between. The ending forces the reader to reread the opening through the lens of the whole text.

What is a circular ending in structural analysis?
The writer returns to the opening image, phrase, or situation at the end -- but the meaning has shifted because of everything in between. The ending forces the reader to reread the opening through the lens of the whole text.
What is an ambiguous ending, and why is it a structural choice?
An ambiguous ending deliberately leaves a central question unanswered. The writer makes this choice to transfer interpretive work to the reader -- the text keeps producing meaning after it ends because the reader must decide. It is a structural choice because the whole text has built toward an unanswered question.
