📖 The First Thing the Reader Meets

📖 The First Thing the Reader Meets

A biography of a famous boxer opens: “He never lost a fight he chose to enter. He lost three he didn’t.”

The reader has not met him yet. They do not know his name, his era, his face. But the writer has already told them something more important than any of that: the distinction between chosen and unchosen defeats. The reader enters the biography already primed to read it as a story about will, not talent. That is what openings do. A Q3 student who writes “the opening is short and impactful” has described the wrapper, not read the gift inside.
