A typical GCSE student opens a Paper 2 Source B and reads: “The labouring poor of this metropolis are, in a very considerable degree, destitute of those domestic comforts which the humane observer cannot but wish to see extended to the most degraded of his fellow-creatures.”
The reaction: skip most of it, find a word you recognise, and describe it vaguely. The problem is not the vocabulary. The problem is not having a reading strategy. Victorian non-fiction has a style you can learn to work with in about four minutes.
Victorian non-fiction writers (1830s–1900s) were writing for educated middle-class readers in a culture of moral seriousness. Their style is not random — it reflects their world.
