📖 The Single Habit That Moves You Up a Grade
📖 The Single Habit That Moves You Up a Grade
Change one word per paragraph. Move up a grade. This is not a metaphor — this is what the AQA examiner reports actually say.
Replace “The text shows” with “The writer chooses” and something shifts in your thinking. You can no longer just describe what is there. You have to explain why someone put it there. That is analysis.
English Language glossary
- What is writer agency, and why does it matter in every reading question?
- Writer agency means making the writer the active grammatical subject of every analytical sentence — the writer chose to do something, for a purpose.

The five trigger phrases:
• “The writer chooses to…”
• “The writer deliberately…”
• “The writer positions…”
• “The writer constructs…”
• “The writer shapes…”

Why it matters: making the writer the subject forces the next question — why did they choose it? That ‘why’ is where analysis lives. “The text shows” describes. “The writer chooses” analyses.
Writer agency means making the writer the active subject of every analytical sentence. A text does not show things. A writer chooses to present things in a particular way, for a purpose. That distinction is the difference between description and analysis.

💡 Making It a Habit
✍️ When you draft
- Before anything else: scan every sentence you have written and replace every “it shows / the text shows / it says / we can see”
- You do not need to rewrite the whole sentence — just change the subject to the writer
- This takes 60 seconds and changes the grade band
📌 When you review
- Check that every analytical sentence has THE WRITER as the grammatical subject, not the text, the character, or “it”
- If a sentence has no writer in it, it is probably describing the plot — cut it or transform it
- Check for Trap 3: any use of “trying to” should become “chooses to”
🎯 What examiners reward
- Consistency, not occasional use. One sentence of writer agency in a paragraph is good; every sentence sustained across every paragraph is what moves L3 to L4
- The L4 descriptor uses the word “analyses” — this is what analysis looks like in grammatical terms: the writer made a choice, and you explain the purpose of that choice
- Combine writer agency with tentative language (“perhaps”, “may suggest”) for the full L4 register
