Writer agency means making the writer the active grammatical subject of every analytical sentence — the writer chose to do something, for a purpose. The five trigger phrases: • “The writer chooses to…” • “The writer deliberately…” • “The writer positions…” • “The writer constructs…” • “The writer shapes…” Why it matters: making the writer the subject forces the next question — why did they choose it? That ‘why’ is where analysis lives. “The text shows” describes. “The writer chooses” analyses.

When should you use “chooses to” vs “deliberately” vs “positions”?

Chooses to — for a specific word, image, or technique: “The writer chooses the verb ‘carved’…” Deliberately — for a structural or tonal decision (something felt at a higher level than a single word): “The writer deliberately opens with the station’s scale…” Positions — when explaining how the reader or a character is placed in relation to events: “The writer positions the reader alongside Ellie before the action begins…” Tip: all three work with tentative language attached — “The writer perhaps chooses to…” is a completely valid L4 sentence-opener.
