📖 The Best Joke You’ve Ever Read

📖 The Best Joke You’ve Ever Read

You are reading a satirical newspaper column about a famously pompous local councillor. The writer spends three paragraphs describing his magnificent 1987 Vauxhall Cavalier, his award from the Regional Management Association, his record-breaking attendance at parish meetings. Then — in paragraph four — you find out he has been sacked.

The joke only works because of the delay. If paragraph one had said “a recently sacked man”, the column would have been mildly amusing. The writer withheld the fact. The three paragraphs of build-up are not filler — they are the mechanism that makes the reveal land. That delay is a structural choice. And it is one of the most powerful tools a writer has.

What is withholding as a structural device?: The writer's deliberate decision to delay a piece of information. The reader feels the gap -- curiosity or unease drives them forward. The withheld information is not absent from the text's meaning; it is deferred, and its delay is the structural choice.
