📋 Tense Recognition by Ear — All Six Frames

Tense Spoken signal / endings Example sentence Translation
Present Verb sounds like a "base" form — je/tu/il/elle conjugation; irregular verbs: suis, ai, vais, fais, dis, vient Je mange une pomme. I eat / I am eating an apple.
Near future (futur proche) aller (present) + infinitive — listen for vais/vas/va/allons/allez/vont + another verb Je vais manger une pomme. I am going to eat an apple.
Simple future (futur simple) Endings: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont added to infinitive — sounds like infinitive + a buzzy ending Je mangerai une pomme. I will eat an apple.
Perfect (passé composé) Auxiliary avoir or être (present) + past participle — two-part verb phrase J'ai mangé une pomme. I ate / I have eaten an apple.
Imperfect (imparfait) Endings: -ais, -ait, -aient — soft "ay" sound; often with quand j'étais petit(e), autrefois Je mangeais une pomme. I was eating / I used to eat an apple.
Conditional (conditionnel présent) Endings: -rais, -rait, -raient — listen for the -r- before the ending Je mangerais une pomme. I would eat an apple.

📋 Time Markers — Sorted by Frame

Frame French time marker English meaning
Past hier yesterday
la semaine dernière last week
l'année dernière last year
quand j'étais petit(e) when I was little
autrefois / jadis in the past / in former times
il y a + time ago (il y a trois ans = three years ago)
Present maintenant now
en ce moment at the moment
aujourd'hui today
normalement / d'habitude normally / usually
tous les jours / chaque jour every day
Future demain tomorrow
la semaine prochaine next week
dans un an / dans deux semaines in a year / in two weeks
bientôt soon
un jour one day (aspirational future)

Demain, j'irai au marché avec ma mère.

Tomorrow, I will go to the market with my mother.

  • j'irai = future of aller. The time marker demain confirms this. The ending -ai is a pure vowel [e]. Compare: j'irais (conditional, I would go) — the ending -ais sounds slightly more open [ɛ] and longer.

Quand j'étais jeune, je jouais au foot tous les week-ends.

When I was young, I used to play football every weekend.

  • jouais = imperfect — habitual past action. The -ais ending and the time marker quand j'étais jeune both signal the past. This contrasts with j'ai joué (perfect — a completed single event).

En ce moment, je prépare mes examens.

At the moment, I am preparing for my exams.

  • prépare = present tense. The time marker en ce moment is the clearest signal; French has no continuous tense — present is used for both "I prepare" and "I am preparing".

⭐ The Critical Sound-Alike: Future vs Conditional

j'irai (future: I will go) vs j'irais (conditional: I would go). In natural speech these can sound very similar. Strategy: listen for the context — is there an if clause (si + imperfect)? If so, the second verb is conditional. If there is no condition, it is likely simple future. Time markers like demain or bientôt also confirm future tense.
