Band 4 version:

In my opinion, environmental problems constitute one of the most urgent challenges that our generation must face. Air pollution, whose effects are felt in large cities, worsens respiratory diseases. That is why it seems to me essential to act now. Although my individual actions seem insufficient, I have considerably reduced my carbon footprint by adopting a vegetarian diet since last year. If I had the choice, I would completely give up air travel in order to preserve our planet's future. Furthermore, I actively campaign in a local environmental group.

afin de + infinitive
In order to. 'J'étudie afin de réussir mes examens.' = I study in order to pass my exams. More sophisticated than 'pour' — shows range. 'pour' is acceptable but 'afin de' scores higher for quality of language.
malgré + noun
Despite / In spite of. 'Malgré la pluie, nous sommes sortis.' = Despite the rain, we went out. 'Malgré les difficultés, je continue.' = Despite the difficulties, I carry on. Followed by a NOUN (not a verb) — simpler than 'bien que' + subjunctive.
