Critical Uses of Each Verb

être — when to use it
  • Descriptions and identity: Je suis grand. Elle est française. Ils sont contents.
  • Telling the time / dates: Il est huit heures. C'est lundi.
  • Auxiliary in perfect tense (Unit 4) for: aller, venir, partir, sortir, arriver, rester, naître, mourir, monter, descendre, tomber, retourner — and all their compounds. Memory aid: DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP
avoir — when to use it
  • Age: J'ai quinze ans. (never je suis quinze ans)
  • Physical sensations: J'ai froid / chaud / faim / soif / peur.
  • Possession: J'ai un frère et une sœur.
  • Auxiliary in perfect tense (Unit 4) for most verbs
aller + infinitive — the near future

One of the most important structures at Foundation: aller + infinitive = going to do something

  • Je vais manger une pizza ce soir. — I am going to eat a pizza this evening.
  • Il va regarder un film demain. — He is going to watch a film tomorrow.
  • Nous allons visiter Paris en juillet. — We are going to visit Paris in July.

This is the standard Foundation way to talk about the future — you do not need the simple future tense.

faire + activities & weather
  • Activities: faire du sport, faire du vélo, faire de la natation, faire les devoirs, faire une promenade
  • Weather: Il fait beau. Il fait mauvais. Il fait chaud. Il fait froid. Il fait du vent.

I am fifteen (years old) and I go to school by bus.

  • ai — avoir for age: j'ai [number] ans is the only correct structure for age in French
  • vais au collège — aller + preposition à; à + le = au (masculine singular contraction)
  • en bus — means of transport: en voiture, en train, en vélo, à pied

Nous faisons beaucoup d'activités mais il fait souvent mauvais en hiver.

We do a lot of activities but the weather is often bad in winter.

  • faisons — nous form of faire: note the stem changes to fais- (not fai-)
  • il fait mauvais — weather expression: the subject pronoun il here is impersonal (it, the weather)
  • souvent — adverb of frequency; placed after the conjugated verb in French
  • en hiver — seasons: en automne, en hiver, en été, au printemps
