🎭 Role-Play Technique — Paper 2 Task 1

AQA 8652 Paper 2 (Speaking) opens with a role-play worth 10 marks. You receive a card with five tasks — four you can prepare, and one marked with ! that you will not see until the examiner introduces it during the role-play itself. The unexpected question is the part most students fear but it is also the part where preparation gives you the biggest advantage, because you can rehearse the exact strategies to handle anything thrown at you.

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors

  • During preparation, write out your question for the ? task in full — you have 12 minutes; do not improvise it
  • Prepare a topic-general rescue sentence for the ! task using the scenario's vocabulary: if the topic is food, prepare Je préfère la cuisine française parce que c'est délicieux
  • Speak at a natural pace — hesitation is normal; rushing creates pronunciation and grammar errors
  • If you use the wrong word and notice it, self-correct aloudpardon, je voulais dire… — self-correction is a positive sign of grammatical awareness
  • Do not translate the role-play card word-for-word — use natural spoken French, not a written sentence read aloud

❌ Common error: Receiving the ! question "Qu'est-ce que vous pensez des transports publics?" and responding with a single word — "Bien." — and then falling silent.

✓ Correct: "Je pense que les transports publics sont très utiles, parce que tout le monde peut voyager facilement." — one full sentence with a reason.

Why it costs marks: A single-word answer to the ! task is marked as incomplete communication — 0 or 1 out of 2. The examiner cannot prompt you further once the task is done. One sentence with a connective or reason is all that is needed to secure 2/2.
