Perspective: how each writer frames and positions the subject

Three Signals of Perspective

Verb choice — who acts, who is acted upon
Adjective/adverb selection — the writer’s evaluative stance
What is foregrounded or omitted — what the writer places first or leaves out

The Perspective Comparison Sentence

“Whereas Source A’s writer constructs [X] as [perspective A]…”
“…Source B’s writer perhaps positions [X] as [perspective B]”
Close with: “The difference is not in [content], but in [perspective claim]”

What Examiners Reward

L3: comparison is explicit and covers both sources throughout
L4: the comparison is perceptive — it identifies the standpoint behind the language, not just the language itself
The closing claim naming the perspective difference is a reliable L4 marker

Use F-V-A to identify perspective in any source before you compare.

F — Framing: what does the writer foreground or omit? What comes first? What is described as central? V — Verbs: who acts and who is acted upon? Active verbs give agency; passive constructions remove it. A — Adjectives/Adverbs: what is the evaluative stance? Do the descriptors suggest burden, privilege, threat, or opportunity? Memory hook: before you compare, find F-V-A in both sources. Then write: “Whereas Source A’s writer [F-V-A perspective A], Source B’s writer perhaps [F-V-A perspective B].” The comparison is between the two perspectives you have found, not between two descriptions.

What is the difference between comparing content and comparing perspectives in Q4?

Content comparison (caps at L2–L3): compares WHAT each source describes — the subject matter, the surface facts, the feelings stated. Perspective comparison (opens L4): compares HOW each writer frames the subject — their standpoint, where they place agency, what their word choices reveal about their relationship to what they are describing. The test: could you make this comparison without reading the sources carefully? If yes, it is a content comparison. A perspective comparison requires close attention to specific word choices.
