What is the ‘shuffle test’ for argument flow?

The shuffle test: once you have written your argument, ask yourself — could I put these paragraphs in a different order and lose nothing? Could paragraph 3 come before paragraph 2 without the argument falling apart? If yes: you have written a list with paragraphs. The order does not matter because each point is independent. If no: you have written an argument. Each paragraph depends on the one before it; the sequence is necessary. This is what examiners mean by “compelling, convincing” writing at Level 5. Aim for: no.

Why does “Furthermore” not create argument flow?

The problem: “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Additionally” signal addition — they add a new point alongside the last one. A list of points joined by “furthermore” is still a list. What creates flow instead: picking up a specific idea from the previous paragraph and extending it. “That absence of belonging...” threads back to what was just argued and builds further from it.
