📋 The Main Trap Patterns

Trap type What happens Key signal words Example
Negation reversal A negative particle flips the meaning of the whole verb phrase ne…pas, ne…plus, ne…jamais, ne…rien, ne…personne Je ne veux plus y aller. (I no longer want to go.)
Correction trap First option is stated, then corrected with mais or finalement mais, finalement, en fait, non…, plutôt Je voulais aller à Paris, mais finalement j'ai choisi Lyon.
Opinion reversal Initial opinion is reversed: "at first… but now…" au début, avant, mais maintenant, aujourd'hui Au début je n'aimais pas ça, mais maintenant j'adore.
Quantifier trap A modifier weakens or exaggerates the meaning presque, à peine, un peu, assez, trop, vraiment, plutôt C'est presque fini. (It's almost finished — not finished.)
Time-frame trap Tense signals whether something is past, present or future — wrong tense = wrong answer -ai (future), ai + pp (perfect), -ais (imperfect), aller + inf. (near future) Je vais faire vs j'ai fait vs je faisais
Vocabulary confusion pair Two similar verbs sound alike but have different meanings savoir/connaître, entendre/écouter, voir/regarder, partir/sortir Il entend la musique (hears) vs Il écoute la musique (listens to)

📋 Vocabulary Confusion Pairs

Pair Meaning A Meaning B Memory tip
savoir / connaître to know (a fact / how to do something) to know (a person / a place — familiarity) savoir = know THAT; connaître = know WHO/WHERE
entendre / écouter to hear (passive — it reaches your ears) to listen (active — you choose to pay attention) écouter shares the -er root with "ear" → active
voir / regarder to see (passive) to watch / look at (active) regarder = re-guard = actively attend to
partir / sortir to leave (a place entirely) to go out (exit — you may return) partir = departure (no return); sortir = sort yourself out and come back
amener / apporter to bring a person to bring a thing amener → mener = to lead (people); apporter → porter = to carry (objects)
emmener / emporter to take a person away with you to take a thing away with you Same logic as amener/apporter — person vs object

Au début je n'aimais pas du tout le sport, mais maintenant j'adore ça.

At first I didn't like sport at all, but now I love it.

  • Trap: student hears "j'adore" and ticks "likes sport". The au début + ne…pas phrase is the initial negative that gets reversed. The current opinion (what the question asks for) is positive — but only the student who heard the whole sentence knows that.

Je voulais aller à Paris, mais finalement j'ai choisi Lyon.

I wanted to go to Paris, but in the end I chose Lyon.

  • Trap: the destination mentioned first (Paris) is the wrong answer. Mais finalement = correction signal. The verb j'ai choisi (I chose — perfect tense, completed action) confirms Lyon is the real answer.

Je ne veux plus aller au club de foot.

I no longer want to go to the football club.

  • Ne…plus = no longer. Students who hear only "aller au club de foot" tick "goes to football club" — wrong. The negative particle plus reverses the entire meaning.

⭐ The Golden Rule

Always listen to the complete sentence before choosing your answer. Examiners deliberately place the correct information in the second half of the utterance. If you decide after hearing the first clause, you will fall into the trap.
