Negation traps: ne…personne and ne…nulle part
ne…personne = nobody / not anybody: 'Je ne connais personne ici' (I don't know anyone here). ne…nulle part = nowhere: 'On ne va nulle part ce soir' (We're not going anywhere tonight). Both sound like positive sentences if you miss the negation word — listen for 'personne' and 'nulle part' as markers of a negative meaning.
Opinion vs reality trap: modal verbs vouloir / pouvoir / devoir
vouloir (to want), pouvoir (to be able to), devoir (to have to) describe intentions, abilities, and obligations — NOT actions that happened. 'Il voulait partir mais il n'a pas pu' = he wanted to leave but couldn't. The trap: students note 'partir' (leave) as the answer, but he didn't actually leave. Always check: is there a modal verb — if so, the action may NOT have happened.
