📋 Au temps composé — Negatives with the perfect tense

With compound tenses (like the perfect tense with avoir or être), the two parts of the negative wrap the auxiliary verb — not the past participle.

Negative Structure Example
ne…pas ne + auxiliary + pas + past participle Je n'ai pas mangé.
ne…jamais ne + auxiliary + jamais + past participle Je n'ai jamais visité Paris.
ne…plus ne + auxiliary + plus + past participle Il n'a plus dormi ici.
ne…rien ne + auxiliary + rien + past participle Je n'ai rien dit.
ne…personne ne + auxiliary + past participle + personne Je n'ai vu personne.

Je n'ai rien mangé ce matin avant l'examen.

I didn't eat anything this morning before the exam.

  • n'…rien wraps the auxiliary ai — the past participle mangé comes after.
  • Compare with ne…personne: je n'ai vu personnepersonne comes after the past participle.
Higher

Pour ne pas oublier ses affaires, elle fait toujours une liste.

In order not to forget her things, she always makes a list.

  • With infinitives, both ne and pas (or other second element) go BEFORE the infinitive — they do not wrap it.
  • Structure: pour + ne pas + infinitive. This is the standard rule for negative infinitive constructions.
  • This feature is specifically tested in the AQA Higher writing tasks and translation paper.

⭐ Negative infinitive rule

When the negative applies to an infinitive (after pour, sans, avant de, essayer de, etc.), both ne and the second element come BEFORE the infinitive together:

  • pour ne pas arriver en retard — in order not to arrive late
  • sans ne rien dire — without saying anything
  • essayer de ne plus fumer — to try not to smoke anymore
