📋 Les expressions négatives — The full range of negatives

Expression Meaning Example Notes
The basic negative — always required at GCSE
Replaces pas — do NOT use pas and jamais together
ne…plus no longer / not anymore Je ne fume plus. Signals a change — great for writing about past habits
ne…rien nothing / not anything Je ne mange rien le matin. rien can also act as subject: Rien ne se passe.
ne…personne nobody / no one Je ne connais personne ici. personne goes at the end of the sentence (after past participle in perfect tense)
ne…que only Je ne bois que de l'eau. Restrictive, not truly negative — articles after ne…que do NOT change to de
Higher tier — strong for writing about plans

I never watch TV in the evening because I have too much homework.

  • la télé stays unchanged (definite article — not affected by negative).
  • This sentence uses a subordinate clause with parce que — exactly the kind of complex sentence rewarded in AO3.
