📋 Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs)
An indirect object is a person introduced by à — the person TO whom or FOR whom something is done. Indirect object pronouns replace à + person.
| IOP | Replaces | English | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| me / m' | à moi | to/for me | Il me parle. (He speaks to me.) |
| te / t' | à toi | to/for you | Elle te téléphone. (She phones you.) |
| lui | à lui / à elle | to/for him/her | Je lui dis la vérité. (I tell him/her the truth.) |
| nous | à nous | to/for us | Il nous écrit. (He writes to us.) |
| vous | à vous | to/for you | Je vous envoie un message. (I send you a message.) |
| leur | à eux / à elles | to/for them | Elle leur répond. (She replies to them.) |
⭐ DOP vs IOP — The Key Contrast
| Pronoun | Type | Replaces | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| le / la / les | DOP | a noun (him, her, it, them) | Je le vois. (I see him/it.) |
| lui / leur | IOP | à + person (to him/her, to them) | Je lui parle. (I speak to him/her.) |
The most common confusion: Je parle à Marc → Je lui parle (NOT Je le parle — parler takes à + person, so it needs an IOP, not a DOP).
Je téléphone à mes parents tous les soirs → Je leur téléphone tous les soirs.
I phone my parents every evening → I phone them every evening.
- à mes parents = indirect object (plural people) → replaced by leur (IOP, plural)
- Note: leur as IOP never takes -s (unlike leurs as a possessive adjective)
