📖 war, hatte, es gab — The Three Past Forms You'll Use Most
German usually uses the perfect tense to talk about the past — but for sein, haben and es gibt, it uses a shorter form called the imperfect: war (was), hatte (had) and es gab (there was / there were). These three forms are everywhere whenever you describe what something was like in the past, so they are the first past-tense words to lock in.

Beispiele: Ich war müde. (I was tired); Es war toll. (It was great); Wir waren im Urlaub. (We were on holiday — der Urlaub = holiday).

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors
- war and hatte are your go-to past forms for describing how things WERE.
- Pair them with es gab to paint a picture of a place in the past: Die Stadt war schön und es gab viele Geschäfte.
- es gab never changes — use the same form for one thing or many: es gab ein Problem / es gab viele Leute.
- Drop one of these into any past description and you instantly show range to the examiner.
❌ Common error: Ich bin müde gewesen.
✓ Correct: Ich war müde.
Why it costs marks: For sein, German uses the imperfect war in normal past description, not the perfect bin gewesen. While bin gewesen is not strictly wrong, war is the natural, expected form and reads far better to an examiner — the same is true for hatte over habe gehabt.
