Die Fotokarte — Describe and Develop

🖼️ Die Fotokarte — Describe and Develop

The photo card (25 marks) is the biggest part of the AQA 8662 speaking exam. You describe a photo and answer several questions — and the key is extended answers: never one word, always add an opinion, a reason, or an example. The examiner is looking for fluency, range of vocabulary, and grammar across all three time frames. Master the opening formulas and the weil-extension pattern and you will score in the higher bands.

Describing the Photo — Funktion und Phrase

A one-word answer scores in the lowest band. The simplest way to extend is the opinion + weil pattern — weil sends the verb to the end of the sentence (verb bracket):

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors

  • Always open with the photo-description formula — it signals a structured, prepared answer
  • After describing the photo, give your opinion immediately: Ich finde das Foto… weil…
  • Prepare a set of opinion + weil sentences for common topics (sport, family, environment, technology) before the exam
  • For follow-up questions: listen for the tense the examiner uses and answer in the same time frame
  • Never answer with a single word — even a simple extension (…weil es Spaß macht) lifts your answer into a higher band

❌ Common error: Answering a photo-card question with one word — Ja. / Fußball. — and then falling silent.

✓ Correct: Ja, ich spiele gern Fußball, weil es Spaß macht und gesund ist.

Why it costs marks: The photo card rewards developed answers. A one-word answer scores in the lowest mark band. The examiner cannot prompt you further once the question is answered. One sentence extended with weil and a reason is all that is needed to reach a significantly higher band — and it takes only five extra words.
