💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors
- Drill the sound-letter rules — German spelling is very regular, so each rule applies every time
- Always pronounce the final -e — it is never silent in German
- Practise sch / st / sp at word starts until they feel automatic
- Do not rush — a clear, slightly slower reading scores better than a fast, muddled one
- For the follow-up questions after the read-aloud, answer in full sentences and use an opinion phrase where possible
❌ Common error: Reading Wasser as 'wosser' (English 'w' sound).
✓ Correct: 'VASS-uh' — German w sounds like English 'v'.
Why it costs marks: German w is pronounced like an English 'v'. Reading it with an English 'w' sound is the most common read-aloud error for English speakers and directly loses pronunciation marks. The same trap applies to v (which sounds like 'f') — two letters that are the exact reverse of English expectations.
