In the AQA 8662 role-play (10 marks) you react to prompts on a card — you say things and ask a question. The examiner plays a German speaker (a hotel receptionist, a shopkeeper, a tourist-office clerk) and you must use the formal Sie. The skill is short, exact answers plus one prepared question — learn the survival formulas and it is an easy 10 marks.

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors
- During your 12 minutes of preparation, write out your (!) question in full — do not improvise it under pressure
- Learn all five survival formulas by heart — they cover the vast majority of role-play prompts
- Speak clearly at a natural pace — rushing causes word-order errors
- If you make a word-order mistake, self-correct aloud: Entschuldigung — ich meine… — self-correction shows awareness
- One or two clear sentences per prompt is enough — do not fill silence with rambling
❌ Common error: Hast du ein Zimmer frei? (to a hotel receptionist)
✓ Correct: Haben Sie ein Zimmer frei?
Why it costs marks: With an official or stranger you must use the formal Sie, not informal du. Using du is a register error that the AQA mark scheme flags directly — it signals a failure to adapt language to social context.
