⭐ The (!) Prompt — You Ask a Question

One prompt on your card makes you ask a question. The examiner does not provide it — you must produce one. Have a question word ready: Wann? Wo? Wie viel? Warum? Was? Wie lange? For example: Wann öffnet das Geschäft? or Wie viel kostet das Zimmer pro Nacht? Prepare this question during your 12 minutes of preparation time so you are not improvising under pressure.

Register — formal Sie with strangers and officials

The role-play examiner plays a stranger or official. Always use the formal Sie: Haben Sie…?, Können Sie…?, Sprechen Sie…? Using informal du or ihr is a register error that costs marks. Add bitte to requests — it sounds natural and polite.

Time frames — match the prompt's tense

A prompt may need a past or future answer. Listen for the time marker and answer in the same frame: Gestern habe ich… gegessen. (past); Morgen werde ich… fahren. (future). The verb bracket applies: the past participle or infinitive goes to the very end of the sentence.

I'd like... — a very polite fixed phrase for shops, restaurants and hotels. 'Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, bitte.' = I'd like a coffee, please. 'Ich hätte gern zwei Eintrittskarten.' = I'd like two entry tickets. (die Eintrittskarte, die Eintrittskarten) Learn it as a set phrase (note the umlaut: hätte).

Haben Sie...?
