Almost every German question starts with a W-word. Learn these eight and you can ask anything — and just as importantly, you will understand the questions you hear in listening and read in reading. They all start with W, which in German is pronounced like an English 'v'. Spot the W-word first and you already know what kind of answer is coming: a place, a time, a reason, a person.

- In listening, the W-word at the start tells you what kind of answer to give — a place, a time, a reason, a person — before you hear the rest.
- If you hear warum, get ready to give a reason.
- If you hear wann, listen for a time word in the answer.
- Do not confuse wer (who) with wo (where).
❌ Common error: Using wer to mean 'where'.
✓ Correct: wer = who; wo = where.
Why it costs marks: wer looks like English 'where' but means WHO; wo means where. Answering a wer (who) question with a place instead of a person shows you have misread the question — a common listening and reading mistake.
