🎭 Das Rollenspiel — Your Survival Phrases

In the Speaking role-play you play yourself in a real situation — buying a ticket, ordering food, asking for directions. A handful of polite formulas will carry you through almost any scenario you are given. Learn them as whole chunks and always use the formal Sie when you talk to a stranger such as a shopkeeper, waiter or official.

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors

  • Keep role-play answers short and exact — answer the question, then add bitte.
  • Use Sie, not du, with officials, shopkeepers and waiters.
  • Ich möchte and Ich hätte gern always sound polite — reach for these first.

❌ Common error: Using 'du' with a shopkeeper: Hast du ein Zimmer frei?

✓ Correct: Haben Sie ein Zimmer frei?

Why it costs marks: with a stranger or official you must use the formal Sie. Using du (informal) is a register error — it sounds rude in German and loses marks in the role-play, which tests whether you can choose the right level of formality.
