AQA Listening questions often ask WHEN something happens — past, present or future. You do not need to spot the time adverb; the verb form tells you. Learn the sound-signals: a helper word plus a ge- word means past; wird plus a verb at the end means future. Once you know the signals, time-frame questions become reliable marks.
1. The Three Time-Frame Signals
The helper (hat, wird) comes early in the sentence, but the word that tells you the actual action — the past participle or infinitive — comes at the END. Always listen to the whole sentence before deciding on the time frame. This is the German verb bracket (Satzklammer) in action.

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors
- Catch the helper first (hat / ist / wird), then wait for the verb at the end — that is where the meaning lives.
- A ge- at the start of a word near the end of the sentence = past participle = past time frame.
- War and hatte are very common past-description signals — recognise them on sight.
- Do not be distracted by time adverbs — the verb structure is the reliable signal even when there is no adverb.
❌ Common error: Hearing Ich werde nach Berlin fahren and answering "past."
✓ Correct: Future — werde + the infinitive fahren at the end signals the future.
Why it costs marks: werde / wird + an infinitive is the future signal. Hearing only the start of the sentence and guessing before the end loses the mark. The verb at the end of the sentence confirms both the time frame and the action — always listen to the end.
