📋 1. The Three Time-Frame Signals
| Time frame | Sound signal | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAST (perfect) | hat / ist / habe / bin + a ge- participle later | Ich habe Fußball gespielt. | I played football. |
| FUTURE | werde / wird / werden + infinitive at the END | Ich werde nach Berlin fahren. | I will travel to Berlin. |
| PRESENT | one conjugated verb, no helper | Ich spiele jeden Tag. | I play every day. |
⭐ The meaning-verb is at the END
The helper (hat, wird) comes early in the sentence, but the word that tells you the actual action — the past participle or infinitive — comes at the END. Always listen to the whole sentence before deciding on the time frame. This is the German verb bracket (Satzklammer) in action.
📋 2. Past Description with war and hatte
War (was) and hatte (had) also signal the past — they are the simple past forms of sein and haben and are very common in spoken German.
| German | Translation | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Es war toll. | It was great. | war = past (was) |
| Ich hatte Hunger. | I was hungry. | hatte = past (had) |
| Das Wetter war schlecht. | The weather was bad. | war = past (was) |
📋 3. Annotated Examples
Ich bin ins Kino gegangen.
I went to the cinema.
- Past signal: bin (helper) + gegangen (past participle with ge- at the start, at the end of the sentence). Answer: past.
Nächstes Jahr werde ich Deutsch lernen.
Next year I will learn German.
- Future signal: werde (helper) + lernen (infinitive) at the end. Even if you miss nächstes Jahr (next year), the verb structure alone tells you it is future. Never answer after werde alone — wait for the infinitive at the end to confirm the action.
