The helper (hat, wird) comes early in the sentence, but the word that tells you the actual action — the past participle or infinitive — comes at the END. Always listen to the whole sentence before deciding on the time frame. This is the German verb bracket (Satzklammer) in action.

War (was) and hatte (had) also signal the past — they are the simple past forms of sein and haben and are very common in spoken German.

Future signal: werde (helper) + lernen (infinitive) at the end. Even if you miss nächstes Jahr (next year), the verb structure alone tells you it is future. Never answer after werde alone — wait for the infinitive at the end to confirm the action.
