At Higher tier you can lift your German with two structures: the narrative imperfect (for telling a story in the past) and the conditional (wĂŒrde / hĂ€tte / wĂ€re â for saying what WOULD happen). The narrative imperfect lets you write smoothly about past events, while the conditional lets you hypothesise â and together they pick up the top AO marks that examiners look for at Higher.

In written narration, German uses the imperfect rather than the perfect to tell a story. Weak verbs add -te to the stem; strong verbs change their vowel.

- Use wĂŒrde + infinitive as your safe, reliable conditional â it works with almost any verb.
- Use hÀtte / wÀre for higher-value "would have" / "would be" sentences.
- The narrative imperfect (ging, kam, spielte) shows sophistication in written work â drop a short past narrative into your Higher writing.
- Remember the Satzklammer: in wĂŒrde sentences the infinitive lands at the very end (Ich wĂŒrde gern nach Italien fahren).
â Common error: Ich werde nach Italien fahren, wenn ich Zeit habe. (this is future, not conditional)
â Correct: Ich wĂŒrde nach Italien fahren, wenn ich Zeit hĂ€tte.
Why it costs marks: The conditional (wĂŒrde ⊠hĂ€tte) expresses what WOULD happen under a hypothetical condition â different from the future (werde), which states what WILL happen. Mixing them up changes the meaning and misses the Higher structure the examiner is looking for.
