In the AQA Listening paper, tiny words like nicht, kein, aber and nicht mehr can flip a whole sentence from positive to negative in an instant. Miss one and you choose the wrong answer. Train your ear to catch these Stolperwörter (trip-up words) — and always listen to the END of the sentence before you decide.
1. Negation Words
A sentence can sound completely positive, then a negative word late on flips everything. Example: Ich spiele gern Fußball, aber heute habe ich keine Zeit. (I like playing football, but today I have no time.) — never answer before the sentence ends.

💡 Exam Tips & Common Errors
- Train yourself to catch the negation word — do not stop listening after the first positive-sounding phrase.
- Do not answer before the sentence ends — the correct information is often in the second half.
- Nicht mehr is not the same as nicht — it specifically means "no longer" (something has changed).
- Erst before a time means "not until" — something has not happened yet.
- When you hear aber, wait — a reversal or contrast is coming.
❌ Common error: Hearing Ich gehe nicht mehr ins Kino and answering "goes to the cinema."
✓ Correct: no longer goes to the cinema — nicht mehr makes the whole sentence negative.
Why it costs marks: Nicht mehr (no longer) reverses the meaning entirely. Missing the negation is the number-one listening error. The examiner places the negation word in the sentence deliberately — train your ear to hear it.
