A sentence can sound completely positive, then a negative word late on flips everything. Example: Ich spiele gern Fußball, aber heute habe ich keine Zeit. (I like playing football, but today I have no time.) — never answer before the sentence ends.

Ich gehe nicht mehr ins Kino.

I no longer go to the cinema.

Trap: hearing Kino and answering "goes to the cinema" — wrong. Nicht mehr (no longer) reverses the entire meaning. This is not the same as just nicht (not) — it signals something that used to happen but does not any more.

Ich mag Sport, aber ich treibe kaum Sport, weil ich keine Zeit habe.

I like sport, but I hardly do any sport, because I have no time.

Three traps in one sentence: aber (contrast coming), kaum (hardly — not "does lots of sport"), keine (no time). A student who answers after Ich mag Sport gets it completely wrong. The correct answer is: hardly does sport.

only — limits the scope of what is said. 'Ich trinke nur Wasser.' (I only drink water.) Sounds less negative than 'nicht' but it is still a restriction — everything else is excluded.

nie

never — a strong negation. 'Ich gehe nie ins Kino.' (I never go to the cinema.) Easy to miss if you are listening fast. It sounds short — one syllable.
