How is 'ch' pronounced in German?
TWO sounds depending on the vowel before it:
• ich-Laut (soft): after i, e, ä, ö, ü, ei, ie, eu — sounds like the 'h' in 'huge' (a breathy soft 'sh-y' sound).
Examples: ich, mich, Mädchen, Bücher, Milch
• ach-Laut (hard): after a, o, u, au — sounds like the Scottish 'ch' in 'loch'.
Examples: machen, Buch, auch, kochen
What is 'ß' and how is it pronounced?
ß (called Eszett or scharfes S) = a plain 'ss' sound.
Examples: heiß (HICE — hot), Straße (STRAH-suh — street), groß (GROHS — big), Fußball (FOOS-ball)
It is NOT a different sound from 'ss' — both sound the same.
Spelling matters though: 'heiß' (hot) ≠ 'weiß' (white) ≠ 'heiss' (wrong spelling).
Always write ß where it belongs — do not substitute ss in the exam.
