Gases are colourless and mostly odourless — you cannot see them, and you certainly should not simply sniff an unknown gas! Chemists have developed four elegant tests over the past two centuries that exploit the unique chemistry of each gas. Each test is essentially a tiny controlled reaction that produces a dramatic, unmistakable result. Master these four tests and you can identify the most important gases in GCSE chemistry with just a splint, some limewater, and litmus paper.
In chemistry, we frequently need to identify which gas has been produced in a reaction. Each gas has a specific chemical test that gives a characteristic, recognisable result. These tests are based on the unique chemical properties of each gas.

Or remember it as a story: "Hydrogen POPS, Oxygen RELIGHTS, CO₂ CLOUDS limewater, Chlorine BLEACHES"
For the litmus confusion: "BLUE bleaches (chlorine), RED turns blue (ammonia)" — opposite colours, opposite results.
Quick Check: A student bubbles a gas through limewater and the solution turns milky. Name the gas and write the ionic equation for the reaction.
