Four German consonants are pronounced completely differently from how an English ear expects — and getting them wrong in a dictation costs you marks. The biggest trap of all: German w sounds like English v, and German v sounds like English f. So «Wasser» sounds like "vasser" and «Vater» sounds like "fater". If you write what the sound suggests in English, you write the wrong letter.
