📋 nicht vs kein — Which negative?
The first decision in any German negative is simple: are you negating a noun, or something else? A noun takes kein; everything else takes nicht.
| Use | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nicht | negates a verb, an adjective or a whole idea | Ich spiele nicht. · Das ist nicht gut. |
| kein | negates a noun (replaces ein / no article) | Ich habe keinen Hund. · Ich habe keine Zeit. |
⭐ kein declines like ein
kein takes exactly the same endings as ein: keinen (masculine accusative), keine (feminine), kein (neuter), keine (plural).
Ich habe keinen Bruder, keine Schwester und kein Haustier.
