📋 Die drei Zeitformen — Past, Present, Future

A time marker (das Zeitwort) signals which time frame you are working in. Place it at the start of a sentence for maximum clarity — but remember the verb still comes second.

Time frameMarkersExample
PAST gestern, letzte Woche, letztes Jahr, vor zwei Tagen, als Kind, früher Gestern war ich im Kino.
PRESENT heute, jeden Tag, normalerweise, im Moment, manchmal, oft Heute spiele ich Fußball.
FUTURE morgen, nächste Woche, nächstes Jahr, in Zukunft, bald Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.

⭐ Time marker first? The verb follows (V2)

When a sentence STARTS with a time marker, the verb comes straight after it — the verb-second (V2) rule:

  • Gestern war ich müde. (NOT Gestern ich war)
  • Morgen gehe ich ins Kino.
  • Jeden Tag lerne ich Deutsch.

The time marker takes position 1, the verb stays in position 2, and the subject moves to after the verb.

Annotated model sentences

Heute spiele ich Tennis, aber gestern war ich im Kino.

Today I play tennis, but yesterday I was at the cinema.

  • heute = present marker
  • gestern = past marker
  • war = past of sein (to be)
  • two time frames packed into one sentence
Higher

Letztes Jahr bin ich nach Spanien gefahren und nächstes Jahr werde ich nach Italien fliegen.

Last year I went to Spain and next year I will fly to Italy.

  • Letztes Jahr … gefahren = past (perfect tense, participle at the end)
  • nächstes Jahr … fliegen = future (werden + infinitive at the end)
  • past and future contrasted in a single sentence — strong AO3
