📋 The V2 rule — the finite verb is element number two

Whatever comes first, the verb stays in position 2 — and if something other than the subject comes first, the subject moves to AFTER the verb. This swap is called inversion.

First element Verb (2nd) Rest
Ich spiele Fußball.
Heute spiele ich Fußball.
Am Wochenende spiele ich Fußball.

Notice that in rows two and three the subject ich sits AFTER the verb, because something other than the subject (Heute, Am Wochenende) took first place.

⭐ The verb bracket (Satzklammer)

When a sentence has two verb parts, they form a bracket around the middle of the clause — the finite (changeable) verb sits in position 2, and the rest goes right to the END.

  • Modal + infinitive: Ich kann gut Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German well.)
  • Perfect tense: Ich habe Fußball gespielt. (I played football.)
  • Separable verb: Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. (I get up at 7 o'clock.)

📎 Subordinating conjunctions send the verb to the END

The conjunctions weil (because), dass (that), wenn (when/if) and obwohl (although) push the finite verb to the very end of their clause.

  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. (I'm staying home because I'm ill.)
  • Ich weiß, dass er Deutsch spricht. (I know that he speaks German.)

Coordinating conjunctions — und (and), aber (but), oder (or), denn (because/for) — do NOT change the word order at all.

🕒 TeKaMoLo — Time, Manner, Place

In the middle of a sentence, details follow the order Time – Manner – Place (TeKaMoLo).

Ich fahre morgen (time) mit dem Bus (manner) in die Stadt (place).

I'm travelling into town by bus tomorrow.

Heute gehe ich ins Kino.

Today I'm going to the cinema.

  • Heute = the first element.
  • gehe = the verb, held firmly in position 2.
  • ich = the subject, which now sits AFTER the verb (inversion), because something other than the subject came first.
Higher

Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich meine Hausaufgaben machen muss.

I can't come, because I have to do my homework.

  • kann … kommen = the verb bracket in the main clause: finite verb second, infinitive at the end.
  • weil sends the clause's finite verb muss to the very end, even after the infinitive machen.

Quick recall flashcards

dass
that (subordinating) -- sends the verb to the end: 'Ich glaube, dass Deutschland schön ist.' Do not confuse with 'das' (the/which); 'dass' is the conjunction.
weil
because (subordinating) -- sends the verb to the end: 'Ich lerne Deutsch, weil es nützlich ist.' Great for adding detail and earning marks in speaking and writing.
