⚖️ What Is Pressure? The P = F/A Equation

Pressure is the force acting per unit area on a surface. It tells us how concentrated a force is — a large force on a small area causes far more damage than the same force spread over a wide area.

P = F / A
Pressure (Pa) = Force (N) ÷ Area (m²)
  • Pressure is measured in Pascals (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N/m²
  • Force is measured in Newtons (N)
  • Area is measured in square metres (m²)
  • You can rearrange to find F = P × A or A = F / P

The equation explains everyday design decisions: knives have thin sharp edges (tiny area = high pressure to cut), drawing pins have a flat head (large area = low pressure on your thumb) and a sharp point (tiny area = high pressure to pierce).
