Key facts at a glance

Part of Higher dictation practice passages · Section 3 of 4

Key FactsUnit: Dictation TechniqueGCSE
  • Higher dictation = 10 marks: Grid A (6 marks, content in the right order) + Grid B (4 marks, accuracy — one more than Foundation)
  • Played three times: 1st = meaning and structure · 2nd = write, holding whole clauses · 3rd = fill gaps then check Grid B
  • Subordinate clauses (weil, obwohl, dass, wenn) send the conjugated verb to the END — the top Grid B target at Higher
  • würde + infinitive (infinitive to the end); hätte and wäre both carry ä — "Wenn ich ... hätte, würde ich ..."
  • Abstract nouns: -keit (Persönlichkeit, Möglichkeit), -ung (Verantwortung, Vorstellung), -heit (Gesundheit) — always capital, always feminine
  • Adjective endings before a noun must agree: ein klassisches Stück (-es), innere Werte (-e)
  • ß after a long vowel or diphthong (groß, weiß, Straße, draußen, genießen); ss after a short vowel (muss, dass)
  • Off-list words are a deliberate feature of the task, not a mistake — write your best phonetic attempt using German sound rules to still earn the Grid A content mark

Which umlaut traps appear most at Higher level?
Abstract nouns and conditional forms: Persönlichkeit, Möglichkeit, Atmosphäre, oberflächlich, hätte, wäre, würde, Stück. A missing umlaut on any of these loses a Grid B mark — and 'schon' vs 'schön' or 'Mutter' vs 'Mütter' even changes the meaning.
Which ß words are easy to mishear at Higher level?
'weiß' (I know — long ei, so ß not ss) vs 'weiss' is wrong; 'große' / 'groß' (long o, ß); 'heißt', 'Straße', 'draußen', 'genießen'. After a long vowel or diphthong write ß; after a short vowel write ss (muss, dass). 'dass' uses ss because the a is short.
