OCR A (J249) β€” Greenhouse Effect Is a Repeat Extended-Response Question

Part of Black Body Radiation Β· Section 8 of 10

Exam FocusUnit: EnergyGCSE

Very High Risk β€” Back-to-Back Repeat

On OCR A Gateway Physics, the greenhouse effect mechanism and global-warming evaluation appeared as a 6-mark extended response (ER) question in both the Jun 2023 and Jun 2024 Higher tier 4H papers (P8 Global Challenges) β€” two consecutive sittings, which is unusually persistent for a board that typically rotates its ER topics between sittings. Treat this as the single strongest predictive signal in the whole OCR A dataset for a repeat appearance.

OCR A's ER format asks for three things in one answer, and marks are lost for missing any of them:

  • Describe the mechanism β€” greenhouse gases absorb outgoing infrared radiation and re-emit it in all directions, so some returns to Earth and the surface must warm to restore the balance between absorbed and emitted radiation
  • Name human contributions β€” burning fossil fuels (COβ‚‚), agriculture and landfill (CHβ‚„), deforestation (reduces COβ‚‚ absorption)
  • Evaluate proposed solutions β€” compare renewable energy, reforestation and carbon capture, weighing effectiveness against cost, scale or speed of impact rather than just listing them

This is the same physics already taught above β€” OCR A does not examine anything AQA, Edexcel or Eduqas do not β€” the difference is purely in exam format: expect a full 6-mark "describe + name + evaluate" ER question rather than shorter part-questions.

This exam focus covers OCR A (J249) β€” Greenhouse Effect Is a Repeat Extended-Response Question within Black Body Radiation for GCSE Physics. Revise Black Body Radiation in Energy for GCSE Physics with 16 exam-style questions and 5 flashcards. This topic appears regularly enough that it should still be part of a steady revision cycle. It is section 8 of 10 in this topic. Treat this as a marking guide for what examiners are looking for, not just a fact list.

Practice questions for Black Body Radiation

What is a perfect black body?

  • A. An object that reflects all radiation that hits it
  • B. An object that only emits visible light
  • C. An object that absorbs all radiation that hits it and reflects none
  • D. An object that is black in colour and absorbs only visible light
1 markfoundation
