Understanding Antigens

Antigens are foreign substances that can trigger an immune response. The term comes from "antibody generator" - literally, substances that generate antibodies.

Types of Antigens:

  • Pathogens: Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites
  • Toxins: Poisonous substances from bacteria or plants
  • Foreign cells: Blood transfusions, organ transplants
  • Allergens: Pollen, dust mites, certain foods

Antigen Recognition: Each antigen has unique molecular shapes called epitopes. These are like molecular fingerprints that immune cells can recognize and bind to specifically.

Quick Recall Flashcards

What is an antigen?
A foreign substance that triggers an immune response by being recognized as non-self by the immune system.
What is an antibody?
A Y-shaped protein (immunoglobulin) produced by plasma cells that binds specifically to antigens to neutralize or mark them for destruction.
