The Human Digestive System

Structure and function of digestive organs, mechanical and chemical digestion, enzymes, absorption, and practical investigations

What you'll cover

  • Digestive system structure: mouth to anus pathway
  • Mechanical digestion: chewing, churning, peristalsis
  • Chemical digestion: enzymes breaking down molecules
  • Organ functions: mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas
  • Stomach acid production and function
  • Small intestine structure and absorption
  • Villi and microvilli adaptations
  • Large intestine water reabsorption
  • Bile production and fat emulsification
  • Peristalsis mechanism and control

Sample Flashcards

What are villi?
Villi are tiny finger-like projections on the wall of the small intestine that greatly increase the surface area for absorption of nutrients.
What is peristalsis?
Peristalsis is the wave-like contractions of smooth muscle that push food through the digestive system. Circular muscles contract behind food while longitudinal muscles relax in front.
