The Reflex Arc Pathway

The reflex arc pathway is the sequence of events that occurs when a stimulus triggers a reflex. It consists of:

  1. Sensory receptors: These are specialized cells that detect changes in the environment, such as pain or pressure.
  2. Nerve pathways: The signal from the sensory receptor travels along a nerve pathway to the spinal cord or brain.
  3. Reflex center: In the spinal cord or brain, the signal is processed and an appropriate response is generated.
  4. Efferent nerves: The response signal is sent back out through efferent nerves to the effector muscles.
  5. Effector muscles: These are the muscles that contract or relax in response to the stimulus, resulting in a reflex action.

Quick Recall Flashcards

What is a reflex arc?
A reflex arc is a chain of nerve cells (neurons) that transmit signals from a sensory receptor to a motor response, helping the body maintain homeostasis.
What is the main function of a reflex arc?
The main function of a reflex arc is to help maintain homeostasis by quickly responding to changes in the body's internal environment.
