Exam Success Tips

Structure-function links: Always connect blood cell structure to their specific functions. Never just state a feature — say why it matters.

Vessel adaptations: Learn the artery/vein/capillary comparison table. Wall thickness, lumen size, and presence of valves are all linked to blood pressure.

Blood clotting sequence: Know the steps in order — vessel damage, platelet activation, platelet plug, fibrinogen to fibrin. You may be asked to put steps in the correct sequence.

Integration: Link blood transport to Topic 11 (circulation) and Topic 13 (gas exchange). The three topics form one integrated system.

Disorders in context: Anaemia, haemophilia, leukaemia, and thrombosis questions ask you to apply your knowledge — work out what happens when a component is absent or abnormal.

Microscopy: Practise recognising blood cells and vessel cross-sections from micrographs. Red cells are the most abundant and have a distinctive biconcave appearance.

Quick Recall Flashcards

What is hemoglobin?
A protein in red blood cells containing iron that binds reversibly with oxygen to transport it around the body.
What are platelets?
Small cell fragments with no nucleus that help blood clot by sticking to damaged vessels and releasing clotting factors.
