Imagine you're comparing the heights of students in two different classes. Class A has heights: 150cm, 155cm, 160cm, 165cm, 170cm. Class B has heights: 140cm, 150cm, 160cm, 170cm, 180cm. Which class is taller on average? Without calculating averages, it's hard to tell at a glance!
Averages help us summarize data with a single representative value, making comparisons easier and patterns clearer.
What is the mean?: The mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values. It's also called the arithmetic average.

Exam Tips for Averages
- Always show your working - especially for mean calculations
- Check your answer makes sense - the mean should be between the smallest and largest values
- For median: Count carefully to find the middle position, especially with even numbers
- For mode: State "no mode" if all values appear equally often
- With decimals: Round your final answer appropriately (usually 1 d.p. unless stated)
- Word problems: Identify what type of average is most appropriate for the context
- Missing values: Use algebra when given an average and asked to find missing values
