Visualizing Overlapping Events
When you're looking at students who play both football and music, or customers who buy both coffee and cake, you're dealing with overlapping groups. Venn diagrams provide a powerful visual way to understand these relationships and calculate probabilities involving multiple events.
Named after John Venn, these diagrams help us see the big picture of how different events relate to each other.
Mathematics glossary
- What does A ∩ B mean?
- The intersection - outcomes where BOTH event A AND event B occur. On the diagram it is the overlapping region between the two circles.
- What does A ∪ B mean?
- The union - outcomes where AT LEAST ONE of event A or event B occurs. Includes only A, only B, and A ∩ B. The ∪ symbol looks like a U for Union.

Exam Tips
- Always start with the intersection - this is usually given directly
- Work outwards - calculate "only A" and "only B" next
- Find "neither" last - use total minus all other regions
- Check your work - all regions should sum to the total
- Use the addition rule - P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B)
- Be careful with language - "at least one" means union (∪)
- Label your diagram clearly - show all numbers in their correct regions
