Cross-Currency Calculations

Sometimes you need to convert between two currencies without a direct rate:

Problem: Convert €500 to Japanese Yen

Available rates: EUR/GBP = 0.87, GBP/JPY = 180

Solution:

Step 1: EUR → GBP: €500 × 0.87 = £435

Step 2: GBP → JPY: £435 × 180 = ¥78,300

Percentage Changes in Exchange Rates

Exchange rates fluctuate - understanding the impact:

Example: GBP/USD rate changes from 1.25 to 1.30

Percentage change: (1.30 - 1.25) ÷ 1.25 × 100% = 4% stronger

Impact: £100 now buys $130 instead of $125 (extra $5)

Best Value Calculations

Comparing different exchange services:

Service Rate (GBP/EUR) Commission €500 costs
Bank A 1.12 2% £459.18
Bank B 1.10 0% £454.55
Online Service 1.15 £3 fixed £437.87

Online service offers best value despite the fixed fee.
