Writing Numbers in Words
Being able to read and write numbers in words is essential for understanding place value:
Small numbers (up to 999):
- 247 = "two hundred and forty-seven"
- 305 = "three hundred and five" (note the zero in tens)
- 89 = "eighty-nine"
Large numbers (1000+):
- 2,456 = "two thousand, four hundred and fifty-six"
- 50,000 = "fifty thousand"
- 1,000,000 = "one million"
Decimals:
- 3.7 = "three point seven" OR "three and seven tenths"
- 0.05 = "zero point zero five" OR "five hundredths"
- 12.34 = "twelve point three four" OR "twelve and thirty-four hundredths"
