The School Network Story

Think about your school's network. All the computers, tablets, and WiFi devices in your school building connect to each other - that's a LAN (Local Area Network). It's local, fast, and your school owns and controls it. Now, when your teacher accesses the BBC website or sends an email to another school across the country, they're using a WAN (Wide Area Network) - specifically, the Internet! WANs connect LANs across huge distances, using infrastructure owned by telecoms companies (like BT, Virgin Media). Your school's LAN is like the roads inside a theme park (small, private, fast). The Internet WAN is like the motorway system (huge, public, slower but connects everywhere)!
